Inspired by Joycelyn Elders, a groundbreaking figure in American medical history. Born on August 13, 1933, in Schaal, Arkansas, she overcame significant socioeconomic challenges to become a physician. Elders is best known for her role as the first African American and the second woman to serve as the United States Surgeon General. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993.

As Surgeon General, Elders was known for her outspoken views and progressive stance on controversial health issues, including drug legalization, contraception, and sex education. She advocated for comprehensive health education, including early sex education in schools, which was somewhat controversial at the time. Her tenure, although brief, was marked by her dedication to public health and her willingness to discuss often taboo health topics openly.

After leaving her position in 1994, Elders returned to the University of Arkansas as a faculty researcher and professor of pediatric endocrinology, where she continued her work in public health advocacy. Her career has been marked by her commitment to improving the health and well-being of young people, and she remains an influential figure in the field of public health.
